The Ultimate Guide to the Dank Storage Mod (Danks)
If you want a storage system that can hold millions of items, auto-pickup, auto-compress, sort, place blocks, and integrate with modded extraction systems — Dank Storage (commonly called Danks) is one of the most powerful utility mods in Minecraft. This guide walks you through every core feature and how to use it effectively.
1. What Are Danks?
Danks are upgradable storage containers that hold huge quantities of items per slot, with higher tiers unlocking more slots and exponentially higher per-slot stack limits.
All Dank Tiers
From lowest to highest:
- Dank 1 — Barrel + Coal
- Dank 2 — Redstone upgrade
- Dank 3 — Gold
- Dank 4 — Emerald
- Dank 5 — Diamond
- Dank 6 — Amethyst
- Dank 7 — Obsidian + Nether Stars
Each upgrade increases:
- Total slots
- Maximum items per slot
- Automation features
Stack Limits
Approximate per-slot limits by tier:
- Dank 1: 256
- Dank 2: 1,024
- Dank 3: 4,000
- Dank 4: 16,000
- Dank 5: 55,000
- Dank 6: 262,000
- Dank 7: 2.147 million (32-bit integer limit!)
This means a single slot in a Dank 7 can literally hold more items than an entire modded storage system.
2. Basic Use — Storage, Slots & Organisation
Right-click the Dank to open its inventory.
You’ll see:
- A grid of slots (increases with tier)
- Current stack limit displayed below
- Configuration options in the bottom-right
Not Just One Stack Per Slot
A slot in a Dank can hold multiple stacks up to the per-slot maximum.
Example for Dank 1:
- Put in 64 logs
- Add another set
- And another
- Up to 256 total, all in one slot
It works the same for every item.
3. Locking Slots
You can lock item types into specific slots:
Hold CTRL + Left-Click an item
This locks the slot to that item type.
This is useful because:
- Locked slots act as filters
- Items sort more predictably
- Pickup mode (explained later) uses locks for filtering
4. Sorting & Config Menu
Click Open Config inside the Dank to access powerful options.
Sorting Modes
You can sort:
- Ascending / descending
- By registry name
- By mod ID
- Or turn sorting off entirely
Auto-Compress (3×3 & 2×2)
If your pack includes reversible compression (e.g., Compressed Cobblestone), Danks can:
- Auto-compress items
- Auto-decompress when needed
- Give you more space per slot
- Keep your storage tidy automatically
This works only for reversible recipes.
5. Pickup Modes
Danks can automatically pick up items that you walk over.
There are three modes:
1. None
- Acts like normal inventory
- Items go into your normal inventory first
- Dank does nothing
2. Pickup All
- Anything you pick up goes straight into the Dank
- Great for mining sessions
- Removes inventory clutter completely
3. Filtered Pickup
- Only items already inside the Dank get picked up
- New/unlisted items go into regular inventory
- Locks determine the filter if slots are locked
- Perfect for mob farms, mining trips, or construction
6. Construction Mode — Place Blocks From Your Dank
Danks can act like a building toolbox.
Press I to toggle:
- Bag Mode — normal storage
- Construction Mode — place blocks directly from the Dank
When in Construction Mode:
- Shift + Mouse Wheel cycles through items
- The current selected item appears beside your hotbar
- Right-click places the block/item directly from the Dank
- You never need to move items into your hotbar manually
This is one of the best features of the mod for builders.
7. The Dock — Automation & Extraction
The Dank Dock integrates Danks with any modded storage or automation system.
To use it:
- Place down the Dock
- Insert your Dank into it (right-click)
- Use any extraction block/pipe from any mod (Mekanism, Thermal, AE2, etc.)
- Set the pipe/machine to Pull
- The Dock behaves like a chest and outputs items from the Dank
You can:
- Extract items
- Sort into storage networks
- Auto-feed smelters or machines
- Use it in full modded logistics setups
Shift-right-click removes the Dank from the Dock.
