Mob Grinding Utils – The Ultimate Guide (Full Explanation & All Features)

If you’re building a mob farm in Minecraft, Mob Grinding Utils is one of the best mods you can install. It adds a huge range of blocks and tools designed to automate mob farming, increase efficiency, and let you collect drops, XP, and resources with almost no effort.

In this guide, we’ll go through every block, item, upgrade, and mechanic in Mob Grinding Utils so you can build the perfect mob farm.

Ender Inhibitor

The Ender Inhibitor prevents Endermen within 8 blocks from teleporting.

Just place it down and right-click to toggle it on/off.

Perfect for:

• Wither skeleton farms
• Endermen farms
• Any area where teleporting mobs are annoying

Wither Boss (and Ender Dragon) Death Muffler

If you farm the Wither or Ender Dragon, this block is a lifesaver.

It removes:

• The loud death sound
• Their boss bars

You can even right-click to put sunglasses on it as an indicator that the boss bars are hidden. Great for automated wither farms or long AFK sessions.

Entity Conveyors

Entity conveyors push mobs (and the player) in the direction opposite where you’re facing when you place them.

They can:

• Move mobs across long distances
• Push mobs downward
• Feed mobs directly into killing chambers

Often paired with Iron Spikes or a Mob Fan.

Mob Fan

The Mob Fan pushes any mob or player caught in its area of effect.

You can toggle it with a lever and visually see if it’s active. (The blue lines seen above).

Inside the fan GUI you can add:

• Width upgrades (max: 3)
• Height upgrades (max: 3)
• Distance upgrades (max: 10)

You can also toggle the working area’s visibility.

Iron Spikes

A simple but effective killing method: mobs pushed onto spikes take damage until they die.

Notes:

• Drops XP, but
• Does NOT count as player kills (important for certain farms)

Use them in combination with fans, conveyors, and tinted glass for perfect kill chambers.

Absorption Hopper

One of the most useful blocks in the mod.

It:

• Picks up items and XP orbs in a 7×7×7 area
• Can store items internally
• Has an internal XP tank
• Can output items/XP in any direction
• Shows a configurable working area
• Works with offsets and multiple sides

Example setup:

• Output XP downward into a Singularity Tank
• Output items upward into a chest

You can fully automate storage, XP routing, and fluid handling.

Upgrades:

• Absorption Radius Upgrade (up to 6)

Singularity Tank & XP Tap

The Singularity Tank stores up to 32 buckets of XP or liquids.

With an XP Tap, right-clicking turns stored XP into orbs you can collect.

XP Drain (Tank Variant)

Stand on it and it will drain all of your XP into the tank — useful for storing or backing up levels.

Tinted Glass

Allows you to see in, but blocks all light.

Great for mob spawning rooms, especially for Entity Spawner farms.

XP Solidifier

The XP Solidifier converts liquid XP into XP Jelly Babies — consumable XP sweets.

Steps:

1. Put liquid XP into the machine (via bucket or fluid pipes).
2. Craft an XP Mold Jelly Baby using:
• 1 XP Bucket
• Gold Nuggets
• A Jelly Baby
3. Place the mold in the machine.
4. The machine outputs Jelly Babies in the chosen direction.

You can store them, eat them for XP, or use them in the Entity Spawner.

Entity Spawner

A powerful way to spawn mobs automatically, but it requires:

• XP Jelly Babies (middle slot)
• A Spawn Egg (top slot)

Important notes:

• Needs a redstone signal to operate
• Spawns fail if the area isn’t dark for hostile mobs
• Works GREAT with tinted glass and iron spikes/mob masher

Upgrades include:

• Height Upgrade
• Width Upgrade
• Speed Upgrade

These let you adjust how fast and how far the spawner operates.

Solidified XP Block

A bouncy block made of crystallized XP.

It’s purely fun — you can bounce around on it like slime.

Mob Masher

The advanced version of iron spikes. Extremely powerful.

Accepts up to 10 upgrades of each type:

• Sharpness
• Looting
• Fire Aspect
• Smite
• Bane of Arthropods
• Beheading

The Mob Masher:

• Counts as a player kill
• Produces XP
• Works with fans or conveyors
• Can be toggled with a lever

Perfect for:

• Wither skeleton farms
• Enderman farms
• Any farm requiring player-kill loot (e.g., heads)

Misc Blocks

Monle & Dark Oak Stone

These appear in the mod but have:

• No recipe
• No clear documentation

Usually added by modpacks as loot-only items.

Chicken Feeds (Hilarious & Useful)

Mob Grinding Utils adds three special chicken feeds, crafted using a Mob Swab.

Mob Swab

Right-click a mob to “collect its DNA”.

Used in crafting GM feeds.

1. GM Chicken Feed

• Feed it to a chicken
• Chicken grows
• Then explodes
• Drops feathers

Hilarious and slightly horrific.

2. GM Chicken Feed (Cursed)

• Made using a spider eye
• Explodes the chicken
• Drops a Rotten Egg

Rotten Egg → Creates a 5×5 area of Dreadful Dirt

Dreadful Dirt:

• Spawns hostile mobs
• Burns in daylight
• Needs low light to spawn mobs

Perfect for hostile mob farms.

3. Nutritious Chicken Feed

• Explodes the chicken
• Drops a Golden Egg

Golden Egg → Creates Delightful Dirt

Delightful Dirt:

• Spawns passive mobs (cows, pigs, sheep, chickens...)
• Amazing for animal farms
