Quick Guide to the Ranged Pumps Mod

If you want a dead-simple, drop-in solution for pumping any fluid in Minecraft — water, lava, modded liquids — the Ranged Pumps mod is one of the easiest utilities you can add to your world. It gives you one item, the Ranged Pump, and that’s all you need.

This guide covers exactly how it works, how far it reaches, and how to use it with your existing tech mods.

1. What the Ranged Pump Does

image

The Ranged Pump: (Above example shows a pump, connected to Mekanism pipes & tanks).

  • Sits above any fluid source
  • Pumps the liquid upward into pipes, tanks, or machines
  • Replaces every collected source block with cobblestone
  • Works in a massive 64 × 64 area
  • Expands outward in a spiral pattern

Once placed, it will systematically search outward from the centre until it has drained the entire radius.

2. Crafting the Ranged Pump

The crafting recipe is extremely cheap for what it does. Drop it early-game and you’re ready to go.

(If you want, I can add the exact recipe depending on the version you're covering.)

3. How to Set It Up

Step-by-step:

  1. Place the pump directly above the fluid you want to drain
    • It must be one block above the liquid surface.
  2. Make sure the pump’s output side is facing upward
    • The top is where liquid will be sent.
  3. Attach any fluid tank or pipe to the top
    • Works with Mekanism, Thermal, Create, Modern Industrialization, etc.
  4. Provide RF/FE power from any side
    • Generators, energy cubes, flux networks — everything works.

Once powered, it immediately starts pulling fluid.

4. How It Pumps (Spiral Pattern)

image

You’ll see the pump:

  • Grab the source block directly under it
  • Replace it with cobblestone
  • Move to the next block in its spiral
  • Continue until the entire 64 × 64 area has been drained

On CurseForge they show a fully processed lake — it becomes a huge cobblestone patch where the water or lava used to be.

5. Fluid Compatibility

The pump works on:

  • Water
  • Lava
  • Modded liquids (oil, sludge, molten metals, etc.)
  • Anything registered as a fluid block

It automatically stores everything in the attached tank or pipe.

6. What You Need From Other Mods

Ranged Pumps itself does not generate power, nor does it store fluid.

You must supply:

A. Power

Any FE/RF mod works:

  • Mekanism Energy Cube
  • Thermal Dynamos
  • Powah!
  • Flux Networks
  • Cyclic

B. Fluid Storage or Transport

Examples:

  • Fluid tanks (Iron Tanks, Mekanism, Thermal)
  • Create Fluid Tanks
  • Pipes, ducts, tubes, fluid cables
  • Ender tanks
  • Barrel-style storage

As long as the storage is on top, you’re good.

7. Performance & Use Cases

The Ranged Pump is ideal for:

  • Clearing large lakes
  • Automated obsidian farms
  • Nether lava pumping
  • Draining oil pools
  • Feeding massive reactor systems
  • Auto-cooling nuclear reactors
  • Supplying industrial machines that need huge amounts of water
  • Infinite water automation in modpacks that remove vanilla infinite sources

Because it replaces every source with cobblestone, it prevents:

  • Infinite loops
  • Water source regeneration
  • Spreading
  • Laggy flowing-water behaviour
